What is Startups?
Startups is a pilot for a web series that we wrote earlier this year.
Why did you make it?
Startups was sort of a practice run. We had written a broadcast length 6 episode series earlier this year that we wanted to produce ourselves, but that seemed like a suicide mission for marginally competent people with no real production experience. Instead, we wrote Startups because we thought it would be easier (pro tip - you lose the "simplicity" of shooting a short when you add like 20 extra people to the cast). We're only going to produce the pilot, but Jeff wrote three more episodes anyway, that you can check out if you're interested.
I'm in Edmonton, and I'd like to make my own short film or web series!
Good for you! The best advice we can offer is to just get out there and do it. Don't worry about the quality of what you're making, just have fun and try to amuse yourselves. Also be sure to check out some of the many great resources for film enthusiasts, like yegfilm and FAVA. You can also reach out to local filmmakers on twitter, under the #yegfilm hashtag.
I'm from somewhere else in Canada, and would like to make my own short film or web series!
Good for you! The best advice we can offer is to just get out there and do it. Don't worry about the quality of what you're making, just have fun and try to amuse yourselves. Your town's film cooperatives are an ideal way to get started. Be brave, jump in and start working! Also, get on twitter and try to find other folks like you. And we'd really like to start communicating and collaborating with people from across the country, so let's start talking on twitter under the #cdnindiefilm hashtag.
